Seminary History

HISTORY

LIFE Theological Seminary of West Africa was opened as a two - year school for the practical development of Christian Leaders in 1955. Rev. and Mrs. Harold Curtis, missionaries of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel with Headquarters in Los Angeles, California, founded the school in a small garage on Herbert Marculay Street in Yaba, Lagos State. They had experienced the revival associated with the ministry of Aimee Semple McPherson and then determined to assist in the spreading of this outpouring of the Holy Spirit to Nigeria and beyond.

Aimee Semple McPherson founded the denomination and the Seminary’s namesake LIFE Bible College at Los Angeles, in 1923. The uniquely gifted Spirit filled evangelist opened the College to help answer her own prayer in asking “the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers in the whitened harvest.”

In 1958, classes were first held at the campus in Ikorodu. More than 1,000 students have graduated from LIFE Theological Seminary of the West African, plus the more than 1,500 who have graduated from Theological Education by Extension. The great majority of the graduates have entered into active and productive “labour in the harvest field” of their generation. In 1988, the name of the college was changed to LIFE Theological Seminary.
